Saturday, June 4, 2022
11:00 am - 2:00 pm
Held at:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finish out Green Funerals Week with a one-of-a-kind experience: a guided tour of Return Home's natural organic reduction facility and the chance to connect with other green deathcare enthusiasts over refreshments and a crafting workshop.
We will begin at 11 am, and the tour is estimated to take about 45 minutes. We will then have a 15-minute break before we head up to Return Home's mezzanine to enjoy refreshments and begin our Soul Collage workshop with Crystal Flores from The Grateful Death. All supplies will be provided, so just bring your creativity! (To learn more about the Soul Collage technique, check out their website.)
All attendees must provide proof of vaccination, but wearing a face mask is at your own discretion. Attendance will be capped to ensure each person has the ability to social distance as they see fit. Thank you for helping us keep the staff of Return Home, People's Memorial, and The Grateful Death healthy and ready to serve their community.
Space is limited, so register now to reserve your space! PMA members receive the reduced rate of $20 for this session, while non-members are welcome for $30

Green Funerals Week: Aquamation and Evelyn
Friday, June 3, 2022
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Alkaline hydrolysis or "aquamation" is a gentle process that uses water, temperature, pressure, and alkalinity (potassium hydroxide) to reduce the body to bones, which are then processed into ashes and returned to the family in an urn. Cremation does the same reduction using flame, however, aquamation uses 1/8th of the energy. This disposition option is now legal in 18 other states, including Oregon, California, and Colorado!
Join us for this session as Rachel LeBlanc walks us through the process and shares the story behind Washington’s first aquamation, a family she was honored to serve.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Featuring:
Rachel LeBlanc is a Funeral Director Intern at The Co-op Funeral Home.

Green Funerals Week: Advocating for Natural Organic Reduction
Thursday, June 2, 2022
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In 2019, PMA partnered with human composting company Recompose to advocate for the addition of two new death care options to be added to Washington law: natural organic reduction, also known as human composting, and alkaline hydrolysis, also known as water cremation or aquamation. This law, SB5001, was the first to legalize human composting and a historic milestone for expanding death care options everywhere. Since then, human composting laws have also been signed in two additional states with several others considering bills in their current legislative sessions.
In this presentation, Recompose founder Katrina Spade will share the story of legalizing human composting, including the highs and lows of legislative efforts and the important role that constituent advocacy has played in building momentum for new death care options.

Green Funerals Week: Greening Cemeteries panel
Wednesday, June 1, 2022
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
What is a green burial? Who gets to decide what is or isn't green? Where does a green burial take place? What are the different kinds of green cemeteries? What is the goal of a green cemetery? Who governs how the cemetery is cared for or managed? How can I learn about resources near where I live?
We know you've got questions about green burial. We do too! The popularity of this option is increasing every year as more and more people ponder the impact their deathcare can have on the planet they leave behind for their loved ones.
PMA is excited to bring together cemetery leadership from Ohio, North Carolina, and Washington to talk about their respective work caring for the dead and the land they return to. You won't want to miss day 2 of Green Funerals Week, where we will hear about the incredible land stewardship happening across the country!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Featuring:
Sara Brink, Director of Foxfield Preserve in Ohio.
Brian Flowers, Managing Funeral Director of The Meadow at Greenacres Memorial Park in Washington.
Heidi Hannapel, Co-founder of Bluestem Conservation Cemetery in North Carolina.
